Eastleigh Walking Football Club's over-70s team reached the national cup final for the first time. They were beaten by a late goal in a comeback attempt against two-time reigning champions Norwich City.
The side had handled a tough path to the final. They saw off Harrogate 2-1 and Matlock 2-0 in the early knockout rounds. A tense semi-final against Preston ended 2-2 before they progressed, and they edged past Worthing on penalties after a goalless draw.
Manager Les Gatrell told reporters he was proud of his squad's historic run. This was their debut appearance in the over-70s final, having previously lifted the trophy three times at the over-65s level. "'Have trust' - Azaz appeals to fans as Saints look to 'take back control' in games," Gatrell said.
He is already looking ahead to next year's competition, eyeing another shot at the title. The achievement provides a positive note for the wider club community. The first team currently sits 10th in the National League with 10 points from six matches, their recent form reading two wins, one draw and two losses. Eastleigh's next match is at home to Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday.
